In 1917, Rapp Motorenwerke GmbH became BMW GmbH. BMW is the abbreviation for “Bayerische Motoren Werke”. One year later, the limited liability company became a corporation. In the beginning, the company manufactured aircraft engines. Amongst others, the engineer Max Friz developed an aircraft engine with overcompression, reducing the power loss at great heights. After the First World War, things did not go too well for the company, because according to the peace treaty, it was forbidden to manufacture aircraft engines in Germany for the duration of 5 years.
As a result, the main shareholder Camillo Castiglioni went to Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW) and renamed them BMW.
In 1928, BMW acquired Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach AG. Now, the company also manufactured vehicles. The main focus was put on lightweight construction for vehicles. Besides the low total weight, efficiency and minimum consumption have become a trademark of the BMW brand.
A sporty character can be found in the 3, 5 and 7 models. In 2012, BMW had another breakthrough with the Mini. The experience and quality of BMW are also incorporated into this smaller model.
